Description

'African Philosophy: Myth and Reality' is a major work in African philosophy in which Paulin J. Hountondji critically examines the idea that there exists a single, collective and distinctly African philosophy expressed through traditional beliefs and worldviews. He challenges the movement known as ethnophilosophy and argues instead for a conception of philosophy grounded in critical, individual and rigorous intellectual inquiry. The book also considers figures and movements including the eighteenth-century philosopher Anton-Wilhelm Amo and Kwame Nkrumah, placing debates about African philosophy within wider questions of colonialism, nationalism and intellectual independence. The second edition, published by Indiana University Press in 1996, includes a new preface in which Hountondji responds to criticisms and clarifies his position.
