Description

'Portraits of the Game and Wild Animals of Southern Africa' by Captain William Cornwallis Harris records his hunting expedition from the Cape Colony into the interior as far as the Tropic of Capricorn in 1836–1837. Harris describes the animals he encountered, their habitats and the hunting expeditions through which he observed them, covering species such as elephant, rhinoceros, lion, leopard, buffalo, kudu, eland, roan and quagga. The book is particularly notable for its thirty hand-coloured lithographic plates, drawn on stone by Frank Howard from Harris's observations and sketches, accompanied by detailed descriptive text. First published in London by W. Pickering in 1840, it is an important early illustrated record of the wildlife and landscapes of nineteenth-century southern Africa.
