Description
'Knysna Forest Scenery' presents a selection of sketches by the nineteenth-century artist W. D. de Vignon van Alphen, depicting the forests around Knysna. Originally made in the 1860s, these works offer a striking visual record of the landscape and vegetation of the southern Cape during the nineteenth century. The 1957 edition, published by A. A. Balkema, includes an introduction and descriptions by D. Bax alongside 20 plates reproducing van Alphen’s sketches. An evocative piece of South African pictorial history, the book is particularly valuable for its documentation of the Knysna forests before the landscape was transformed by later development.
