Description

'The Beauty and the Sorrow' by Peter Englund presents the First World War through the experiences of twenty individuals from different countries and backgrounds. Drawing on diaries, letters and memoirs, Englund follows both civilians and soldiers across the Western and Eastern Fronts, Italy, the Balkans, Africa, Mesopotamia, Palestine and the home fronts. Rather than presenting the war primarily through battles and military commanders, the book focuses on the everyday experiences, emotions and observations of the people who lived through it. Originally published in Sweden in 2008, it was translated into English by Peter Graves and published in Britain in 2011.
