Description
'War in the Desert' by Neil Orpen is the third volume in the official history of South African forces during the Second World War. Published by Purnell in 1971, it documents South Africa’s military involvement in the North African campaign, including the battles against German and Italian forces in the Western Desert and the pivotal fighting at Tobruk and El Alamein. Drawing on military records, correspondence and previously unpublished documents, Orpen examines the conduct of operations, the experiences of South African troops and the challenges of maintaining a volunteer army far from home. Illustrated with photographs, maps and diagrams, this detailed historical volume is an important reference for readers interested in South African military history and the North African theatre of the Second World War.
