Description
'Twentieth Century Book of the Dead' by Gil Elliot is a study of mass death and human violence during the twentieth century, examining deaths caused by war, political violence, persecution, famine and other forms of organised or man-made suffering. Elliot considers the two World Wars alongside events including the Russian Civil War, the Holocaust, conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, and other episodes of mass killing. Rather than treating the dead simply as statistics, he examines the circumstances in which people died and considers the historical and moral implications of mass violence. First published in 1972, the book was based on Elliot’s research into the scale and nature of man-made death during the first three-quarters of the twentieth century.
