Description

'Der Fuehrer' by Konrad Heiden is an early major biography of Adolf Hitler and an account of the rise of the National Socialist movement in Germany. Heiden, a German journalist who had observed the Nazi movement from its early years, traces Hitler's political development, the growth of the Nazi Party and its rise to power, drawing on contemporary observation, research and material unavailable to many later historians. The book follows events through Hitler's consolidation of power and the early years of the Nazi regime, providing a critical contemporary perspective on the movement and its leader. Originally published in German and issued in English in 1944, the English edition was translated by Ralph Manheim, with Norbert Guterman translating the final chapter and part of the preceding chapter.
