Description

'The Story of My Captivity During the Transvaal War 1899–1900' is Adrian Hofmeyr’s firsthand account of his experiences as a prisoner during the South African War. When war broke out in October 1899, Hofmeyr was travelling through British Bechuanaland and was subsequently captured by Boer forces, spending much of his captivity in Pretoria. He describes prison life, his fellow prisoners, daily routines and an attempted escape, while also recording his observations and opinions about the war and the political divisions of the period. First published in London by Edward Arnold in 1900, the book provides a contemporary personal account of captivity during the Anglo-Boer War.
