Description

'The Ferns and Fern Allies of Southern Africa' by W. B. G. Jacobsen is a comprehensive botanical treatment of the ferns and related non-flowering plants of southern Africa. Published by Butterworths in 1983, the 542-page volume covers the flora of South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and the southern part of Mozambique, with extensive information on distribution and ecology. It describes 338 species, subspecies and varieties and includes illustrations, tables and range maps. The book became an important reference work on the region’s pteridophytes and was later followed by updated treatments such as J. E. Burrows’s 'Southern African Ferns and Fern Allies'.
