Description
'Epochs of Chinese and Japanese Art: An Outline History of East Asiatic Design' by Ernest F. Fenollosa is a major survey of the development of Chinese, Japanese and Korean art, examining artistic traditions through successive historical periods. Fenollosa considers painting, sculpture and other forms of artistic expression in relation to the religious, cultural and aesthetic ideas of their time, with particular attention to the influence of Buddhism. The two volumes trace subjects ranging from early Chinese art and Buddhist art through the Tang, Nara, Fujiwara and Kamakura periods, before turning to later Chinese and Japanese art. The work was published posthumously in two volumes in 1912, edited from Fenollosa’s manuscripts by his widow, Mary McNeil Fenollosa, and the revised 1913 edition included extensive notes on artists by R. Petrucci.
