Description

'Suspense' by Joseph Conrad is the unfinished historical novel on which Conrad was working during the final years of his life. Set in Venice in 1815, during the period following Napoleon’s defeat, the story follows the young Englishman Cosmo Latham, who becomes caught up in political intrigue, espionage and the uncertain loyalties surrounding the restoration of European monarchies. Conrad’s fascination with the atmosphere of post-Napoleonic Europe gives the novel a different setting from his better-known maritime fiction, while themes of secrecy, betrayal and moral uncertainty remain familiar. Published posthumously in 1925, 'Suspense' was left incomplete at Conrad’s death in 1924, making it an intriguing but fragmentary final work.
