Description

'Under Western Eyes' by Joseph Conrad is a political and psychological novel set in Russia and Geneva against the backdrop of revolutionary unrest in the early twentieth century. It follows Razumov, a young philosophy student who is drawn into political intrigue when the revolutionary Victor Haldin arrives at his apartment after assassinating a government official. Razumov’s decision to betray Haldin leads him into a dangerous world of surveillance, espionage and conflicting loyalties, where he becomes entangled with Russian political exiles in Geneva. First published in 1911, the novel explores betrayal, political violence, personal responsibility, identity and the difficulty of understanding a society from an outsider’s perspective, and is often discussed alongside Dostoevsky’s 'Crime and Punishment'.
