Description
'Victory' by Joseph Conrad is a psychological novel of isolation, chance and moral struggle, centred on Axel Heyst, a Swedish wanderer living alone on a remote island in the Malay Archipelago. His secluded existence is disrupted when he becomes involved with Lena, a young woman escaping from an abusive employer, and the two attempt to build a life together. Their fragile refuge is threatened by the arrival of Mr Jones, Martin Ricardo and Pedro, a sinister group whose motives and loyalties gradually become clear. First published in 1915, the novel combines adventure, suspense and psychological drama while exploring idealism, loneliness, compassion, violence and the difficulty of withdrawing completely from the demands of human relationships.
