Description

'Almayer's Folly' by Joseph Conrad is his first novel, published in 1895 and set in the Dutch East Indies of the late nineteenth century. It follows Kaspar Almayer, a Dutch trader living in the Borneo jungle, whose dreams of discovering a fortune in gold and returning to Europe with his daughter Nina are increasingly frustrated by his failing business and troubled family life. When Nina falls in love with Dain Maroola, a Malay prince, Almayer’s hopes for her future come into conflict with her own sense of identity and independence. The novel explores colonialism, cultural division, ambition, family loyalty and isolation, establishing themes and settings that Conrad would develop throughout his later fiction.
