Description
'Lord Jim' by Joseph Conrad follows Jim, a young British seaman whose moment of cowardice aboard the pilgrim ship *Patna* leaves him haunted by shame and determined to redeem himself. After abandoning the apparently sinking vessel, Jim loses his officer’s certificate and eventually finds a new life in the remote Southeast Asian port of Patusan, where he becomes known as “Tuan Jim” and earns the respect of its inhabitants. Yet his troubled past remains a source of guilt and uncertainty, and his attempt to live according to an ideal of courage and honour ultimately brings him face to face with the consequences of his earlier actions. First published in book form in 1900, the novel explores honour, guilt, heroism, responsibility and the gap between ideals and human weakness through Conrad’s distinctive, psychologically complex narrative style.
