Description
'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens is set in the fictional industrial town of Coketown and centres on Thomas Gradgrind, a schoolmaster and politician who insists that children should be educated according to facts rather than imagination or emotion. His rigid philosophy shapes the lives of his children, Louisa and Tom, while the wealthy mill owner Josiah Bounderby presents himself as a self-made man. As their lives become entangled with the struggles of the factory workers, Dickens examines industrialisation, poverty, education, marriage and the consequences of treating human beings as merely economic units. First published in weekly instalments in Dickens’s journal 'Household Words' in 1854, the novel combines social criticism with humour, drama and memorable characters.
