Description

'Barnaby Rudge' by Charles Dickens is a historical novel set against the Gordon Riots of 1780, a period of violent anti-Catholic unrest in London. The story follows Barnaby Rudge, a young man with an intellectual disability and his pet raven Grip, alongside a large cast of characters whose lives become entangled in murder, family conflict, conspiracy and the political and religious tensions of the period. As the riots spread through London, the novel’s personal dramas become increasingly caught up in the violence and disorder of the city. First published in serial form in 'Master Humphrey’s Clock' between February and November 1841, and subsequently issued in book form, it combines historical fiction with elements of mystery, Gothic drama and social commentary.
