Description

'Little Dorrit' by Charles Dickens follows Amy Dorrit, the youngest daughter of William Dorrit, who has spent her entire life in London’s Marshalsea debtors’ prison, where her father is known as the “Father of the Marshalsea.” When Arthur Clennam returns to England after many years abroad, he becomes drawn into the Dorrit family’s affairs while investigating a mysterious message left by his dying father. The novel explores poverty, wealth, imprisonment and social class, while satirising the failures of the legal and bureaucratic systems of Victorian England. Published in monthly parts from 1855 to 1857, it moves between the worlds of poverty and sudden prosperity as the lives of the Dorrit family and those around them are transformed.
