Description

'A Journal of the Plague Year' by Daniel Defoe is a vivid fictionalised account of the Great Plague of London of 1665, presented through the observations of a London resident known as H. F. Defoe describes the spread of the disease, the closing of houses, quarantine measures, death statistics, public fear and the disruption of everyday life as the epidemic moves through the city. Although written more than fifty years after the events it describes and presented as the recollections of an eyewitness, the book draws on contemporary documents, including bills of mortality and other accounts of the plague. First published in 1722, it occupies a distinctive place between historical record, documentary reconstruction and literature, offering a detailed portrait of London during one of the most devastating epidemics in its history.
