Martin Chuzzlewit — Charles Dickens (Oxford Illustrated Dickens)
1 in stock
Description
'Martin Chuzzlewit' by Charles Dickens centres on the wealthy but quarrelsome Martin Chuzzlewit and his family, whose relationships are shaped by greed, inheritance and self-interest. The story follows the younger Martin as he falls out with his grandfather and travels to America, where Dickens satirises American society through his experiences alongside the optimistic but unreliable Mr Pecksniff, the scheming Jonas Chuzzlewit and the good-hearted Tom Pinch. As the various members of the Chuzzlewit family pursue money and social advantage, their actions expose the selfishness and hypocrisy beneath respectable appearances. The novel was published in monthly parts by Chapman and Hall from December 1842 to June 1844 and combines comedy, social satire and a complex web of family intrigue.
