Description

'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens follows Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, from his childhood in the Kent marshes to his unexpected rise into London society. After encountering the escaped convict Abel Magwitch and visiting the wealthy Miss Havisham, Pip becomes convinced that an anonymous benefactor is preparing him for a gentleman’s life and that Miss Havisham intends him to marry her beautiful ward, Estella. His new circumstances bring wealth, education and social ambition, but also force him to reconsider his ideas about loyalty, love, social class and what it means to be a gentleman. First published in weekly instalments from December 1860 to August 1861, the novel combines humour, mystery and psychological development with Dickens’s sharp examination of class and ambition.
