Description

'Silas Marner' by George Eliot tells the story of a solitary linen-weaver who, after being falsely accused of theft and betrayed by his closest friend, withdraws from society and devotes himself to accumulating gold. His isolated existence changes when his savings are stolen and a young golden-haired child, Eppie, unexpectedly enters his life. Through Silas’s relationship with Eppie, the novel explores love, community, faith, loss and the possibility of renewal after suffering. First published in 1861, the novel is set in the fictional English village of Raveloe and contrasts Silas’s transformation with the secrets and moral failures of the wealthy Cass family.
