Maurice — E. M. Forster (Penguin, film tie-in)

Description
'Maurice' by E. M. Forster follows Maurice Hall, a young man from a comfortable middle-class background whose education at Cambridge brings him into a close relationship with Clive Durham. Their relationship forces Maurice to confront desires that cannot be openly acknowledged in the society in which he lives, and his later meeting with Alec Scudder, a gamekeeper, changes his understanding of love and the possibility of a life lived honestly. The novel explores sexuality, class, social convention and the struggle for personal freedom in Edwardian England. Forster completed the novel in 1914 but chose not to publish it during his lifetime; it was published posthumously in 1971, the year after his death.
