Description
'Tom Jones' by Henry Fielding follows the life and adventures of Tom Jones, a good-natured but impulsive young man who is raised by the wealthy country gentleman Squire Allworthy. Tom’s love for Sophia Western, the daughter of his neighbour Squire Western, is complicated by his rival Blifil, whose outward respectability conceals a calculating and vindictive nature. After Tom is banished from Allworthy’s estate, the novel follows his travels through eighteenth-century England, bringing him into contact with a colourful range of characters and situations. First published in 1749, the novel combines comedy, romance and social satire while examining morality, hypocrisy, class and human character.
