Description

'Flowering Wilderness' by John Galsworthy is the second novel in the three-part 'End of the Chapter' sequence, following 'Maid in Waiting' and preceding 'Over the River'. Set in England in the early 1930s, it centres on Dinny Cherrell and her growing love for Wilfrid Desert, a former colonial officer whose actions during his service abroad have brought him into conflict with the expectations and honour of his family and social class. Their relationship is complicated by questions of loyalty, reputation and the moral responsibilities attached to Britain's imperial position. First published in 1932, the novel continues Galsworthy's examination of love, social convention and the changing values of the British upper classes.
