Description

'The Forsyte Saga' by John Galsworthy chronicles several generations of the wealthy Forsyte family, beginning in the late Victorian period and following them into the early twentieth century. At its centre is Soames Forsyte, a prosperous solicitor whose possessive attitude towards his wife, Irene, leads to a disastrous marriage and lasting conflict within the family. The story follows the consequences of these relationships across generations, contrasting the Forsytes' attachment to property, respectability and social position with the claims of love, beauty and personal freedom. The complete saga comprises three novels—'The Man of Property', 'In Chancery' and 'To Let'—with two interludes, 'Indian Summer of a Forsyte' and 'Awakening', and was published between 1906 and 1921.
