Description

'Love of Seven Dolls' by Paul Gallico follows Mouche, a lonely young woman in post-war France who, on the verge of despair in Paris, encounters a travelling puppet troupe. She becomes fascinated by the seven puppets—Carrot Top, Reynardo the Fox, Gigi, Alifanfaron, Dr Duclos, Madame Muscat and Monsieur Nicholas—and joins the troupe as it travels through the French countryside. At the centre of the troupe is the secretive and seemingly cruel puppeteer, Capitaine Coq, whose relationship with Mouche gradually reveals the connection between the puppets and the man who controls them. First published in 1954, the novella was the basis for the film 'Lili' and explores loneliness, love, illusion and the human need to find companionship.
