Description
'My Century' by Günter Grass is a wide-ranging literary portrait of Germany and the twentieth century, told through one hundred short pieces, one for each year of the century. Each chapter adopts a different narrator and perspective, moving through personal memories, historical events and everyday experiences to create a many-voiced account of a turbulent era. Grass addresses subjects including the two World Wars, the rise and fall of Nazism, the division of Germany and its reunification, while also exploring how ordinary people remember and interpret history. First published in German in 1999, the book combines fiction, historical reflection and satire to examine the relationship between individual memory and collective history.
