Description

'The Inheritors' by William Golding is a prehistoric novel set near the end of the Neanderthal era, following a small group of Neanderthals as they encounter a more advanced group of early modern humans. The story is largely experienced through the perceptions of Lok, a gentle and imaginative Neanderthal, whose limited understanding of the newcomers makes their actions mysterious and frightening. As the two groups come into conflict, Golding explores the origins of violence, the loss of innocence and the uneasy boundary between humanity and savagery. First published in 1955, the novel presents human prehistory from an unusual perspective and challenges assumptions about which species should be regarded as the true "inheritors" of the earth.
