Description

'The Scorpion God' by William Golding is a collection of three novellas set in different ancient societies: 'The Scorpion God', 'Clonk Clonk' and 'The Messengers'. The title story takes place in ancient Egypt and follows a young Pharaoh whose attempts to assert himself are constrained by the elaborate customs and rituals surrounding him. 'Clonk Clonk' is set among a prehistoric people and centres on an outsider whose unusual ideas disturb the established order, while 'The Messengers' depicts the arrival of Christianity in the ancient world and the conflict between the new faith and established beliefs. First published in 1971, the collection uses distant historical settings to explore power, religion, social conformity and human nature.
