Description

'The Life of Charlotte Brontë' by Elizabeth Gaskell is a biography of the English novelist best known for 'Jane Eyre'. Drawing on Charlotte Brontë's letters, family papers and the recollections of people who knew her, Gaskell traces her childhood at Haworth, her education and work as a teacher and governess, the development of her writing, and the deaths of her siblings before her own death in 1855. The biography also covers the publication and reception of 'Jane Eyre', 'Shirley' and 'Villette', as well as Charlotte's marriage to Arthur Bell Nicholls. Published in 1857, only two years after Charlotte's death, the book became an important early account of her life, although some of Gaskell's representations of the Brontë family were later questioned or corrected.
