Description
'The Mayor of Casterbridge' follows Michael Henchard, a young hay-trusser who, in a drunken fit at a country fair, sells his wife Susan and their infant daughter to a sailor named Newson. Horrified by his actions after sobering up, Henchard vows not to drink for twenty-one years and eventually rises to become the respected mayor and a prosperous corn merchant in the town of Casterbridge. Years later, Susan and her daughter return to his life, while the arrival of the ambitious young Scotsman Donald Farfrae gradually threatens Henchard's position and prosperity. First published in 1886, the novel is a tragedy of character and fate, exploring guilt, pride, jealousy, love and the consequences of decisions that cannot be undone.
