Description
'Siddhartha' follows a young Brahmin who leaves his privileged life in ancient India in search of spiritual enlightenment. Rejecting both traditional teachings and the ascetic life of the Samanas, Siddhartha pursues his own path through meditation, love, wealth and worldly experience before finding wisdom through his relationship with the ferryman Vasudeva and the river. The novel explores the nature of knowledge, suffering, desire and the limits of learning from others, emphasising that true understanding must ultimately be experienced for oneself. First published in 1922, it is one of Hesse’s best-known explorations of spiritual and philosophical self-discovery.
