Description
'Peter Camenzind' is Hermann Hesse’s first novel, published in 1904, and follows its narrator from a rural Swiss childhood into a life of travel, study and encounters with people from very different backgrounds. Peter seeks meaning through literature, friendship, love and his idealised relationship with nature, but repeatedly finds himself disappointed by society and by his own inability to form lasting connections. His friendship with the physically disabled Boppi becomes especially important, confronting Peter with questions of compassion, suffering and genuine human connection. The novel explores the tension between the solitary individual and society, while already anticipating Hesse’s later concerns with self-discovery, nature and the search for a meaningful life.
