Description

'The Prodigy' is Hermann Hesse’s 1906 novel, originally published in German as 'Unterm Rad' and also known in English as 'Beneath the Wheel'. It follows Hans Giebenrath, a gifted and sensitive boy whose academic success leads him to a demanding theological seminary, where intense pressure gradually undermines his health and sense of self. His friendship with the rebellious and imaginative Hermann Heilner offers Hans a glimpse of a freer life, but the rigid educational system leaves little room for individuality or emotional development. Drawing on Hesse’s own experiences at the Maulbronn seminary, the novel is a powerful criticism of an education that sacrifices a young person’s humanity to academic achievement.
