Description
'Rosshalde' is Hermann Hesse’s 1914 novel about the failing marriage of the painter Johann Veraguth and his wife Adele, who live largely separate lives on their country estate. Their younger son Pierre remains the principal bond between them, while Johann struggles between his responsibilities as a father and his desire for artistic and personal freedom. When Pierre becomes seriously ill, the family’s suppressed tensions and emotional divisions come to the surface, forcing Johann and Adele to confront the reality of their relationship. Drawing partly on Hesse’s own troubled marriage, the novel explores artistic independence, family ties, loneliness and the painful process of separation.
