Description
'Stories and Poems' by Bret Harte brings together a selection of the American writer's celebrated stories and verse, much of it drawing on his experiences and observations of life in California during and after the Gold Rush. His fiction is particularly known for memorable characters such as miners, gamblers, outcasts and settlers, often portrayed with humour, sentiment and sympathy. The collection includes the distinctive regional settings and speech for which Harte became an important early writer of the American West, alongside poems that display his characteristic wit and emotional warmth. His work helped establish the literature of the California frontier and influenced later portrayals of life in the American West.
