Description
'Doctor Faustus' is a 1947 novel by Thomas Mann, narrated by Serenus Zeitblom and centred on the life of the fictional German composer Adrian Leverkühn. After making a pact with the Devil, Leverkühn gains extraordinary creative powers at the cost of his humanity, while his life unfolds against the background of Germany’s descent into Nazism and the Second World War. Mann draws on the Faust legend to explore artistic genius, intellectual ambition, isolation and the moral consequences of Germany’s cultural and political corruption. The novel is also deeply concerned with music, incorporating ideas from music theory and the work of composers such as Arnold Schoenberg.
