Description
'The Magic Mountain' is a 1924 novel by Thomas Mann set in a Swiss sanatorium in the years immediately before the First World War. The protagonist, Hans Castorp, arrives intending to visit his cousin for a short stay but becomes absorbed in the strange, secluded world of the patients and remains there for seven years. Through conversations and conflicts among the residents, Mann explores competing ideas about time, illness, death, love, politics and European civilisation. The novel is both a richly detailed portrait of life in the sanatorium and an allegorical examination of the intellectual and cultural tensions of pre-war Europe.
