Description

'Queer' by William S. Burroughs is an early novel written in 1952 but not published until 1985. Set in Mexico City in the early 1950s, it follows William Lee, the protagonist of 'Junky', as he struggles with heroin withdrawal and an increasingly obsessive desire for the younger Eugene Allerton. Drawing partly on Burroughs’s own experiences, the novel combines an intimate account of loneliness and desire with dark humour, grotesque fantasy and observations of the American expatriate community in Mexico. 'Queer' occupies an important place in Burroughs’s development as a writer, anticipating the experimental style and themes that would emerge more fully in 'Naked Lunch'.
