Description
'Tropic of Capricorn' is Henry Miller’s semi-autobiographical novel, first published in Paris in 1939. Set largely in New York during the 1920s and 1930s, it draws on Miller’s experiences working for the Western Union Telegraph Company and follows his struggles with employment, relationships, poverty and his determination to become a writer. Written in an intensely personal and often deliberately provocative style, the novel moves between narrative, reflection and philosophical meditation on modern life, sexuality, art and the search for personal freedom. Alongside 'Tropic of Cancer', it is regarded as one of Miller’s major works and was banned in the United States for many years because of its sexual content.
