Description

'The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter' is Carson McCullers’s debut novel, first published in 1940. Set in a small Georgia mill town during the late 1930s, it centres on John Singer, a deaf man who becomes a silent confidant to several isolated people, including Mick Kelly, a young girl with ambitions of becoming a musician; Benedict Mady Copeland, a Black doctor; Jake Blount, an alcoholic and socialist; and Biff Brannon, the owner of a local café. As their lives intersect, McCullers explores loneliness, alienation, racial tensions and the human need to be understood. The novel is noted for its compassionate portrayal of people living on the margins of their community and established McCullers as an important American writer.
