Description

'The Right to an Answer' by Anthony Burgess is a darkly comic novel about J. W. Denham, an English expatriate who returns from Japan to his Midlands home and becomes preoccupied with what he sees as the moral and social disorder of post-war Britain. His observations are complicated by the arrival of Mr Raj, a student from Ceylon researching British attitudes towards racial difference, whose presence unsettles the local community and Denham’s own assumptions. Burgess uses the resulting conflicts, affairs, friendships and violence to explore questions of morality, responsibility, cultural difference and the uneasy position of the returning expatriate. First published by Heinemann in 1960, the novel combines social satire with Burgess’s characteristic comic style and was one of his early novels following his return to England from his years in Malaya and Brunei.
