Description
Set in the industrial Potteries of Staffordshire, 'Anna of the Five Towns' follows Anna Tellwright, the dutiful daughter of a wealthy but miserly Nonconformist businessman. Her inheritance and family circumstances give her financial security, but also place her under the strict control of her father and the expectations of the community around her. As Anna’s relationships develop, particularly with Henry Mynors and the idealistic Willie Price, she is forced to confront questions of love, money, religion and personal freedom. First published in 1902, the novel is one of Arnold Bennett’s notable portrayals of life in the Five Towns, the fictionalised version of the Potteries where he was born and raised.
