Description

'The American' follows Christopher Newman, a wealthy and self-made American businessman who travels to Europe seeking culture, refinement and a suitable marriage. In Paris he becomes enamoured of Claire de Cintré, a beautiful French widow from the aristocratic Bellegarde family, but her family strongly opposes the match because of Newman’s lack of noble ancestry. As Newman encounters the rigid traditions and hidden conflicts of the Bellegardes, his confidence and straightforward American outlook come into conflict with the complexities of European aristocratic society. First published in 1877, the novel explores the contrast between American energy and European tradition, as well as love, social class, ambition and personal freedom.
