Description

'The Europeans' follows two European relatives, Eugenia Münster and Felix Young, who travel to New England and encounter their austere American cousins, the Wentworth family. Eugenia, a cultivated but dissatisfied baroness, hopes to reshape her life through a divorce and a new marriage, while Felix brings a more carefree European attitude that contrasts sharply with the family’s strict New England values. Their presence disrupts the household and leads to a series of romantic entanglements, misunderstandings and clashes between European and American social conventions. First published in 1878, the novel uses humour and irony to explore cultural difference, marriage, social expectations and the contrasting ideas of freedom and propriety on either side of the Atlantic.
