Description
'The Ambassadors' follows Lambert Strether, a middle-aged American sent to Paris by his wealthy fiancée’s family to persuade her son, Chadwick Newsome, to return home and take up his responsibilities in the family business. In Paris, Strether discovers that Chad’s life is very different from what he had been led to believe, and his growing appreciation of European culture forces him to reconsider his own assumptions and past choices. His encounter with the sophisticated Madame de Vionnet further complicates his mission and his understanding of Chad’s relationship with her. Published in 1903, the novel explores perception, cultural difference, personal freedom and the possibility of changing one’s life through new experience.
