Description

'The Portrait of a Lady' follows Isabel Archer, a young American woman who travels to Europe and finds herself confronted with questions of independence, love, marriage and social expectation. After inheriting a substantial fortune, Isabel is determined to control her own life, but her marriage to the cultured yet manipulative Gilbert Osmond gradually reveals the limits of her freedom. Set between America, England and Italy, the novel explores the clash between individual ideals and the complex social conventions of nineteenth-century European society. First published in book form in 1881, it is one of Henry James’s most acclaimed studies of consciousness, choice and the consequences of experience.
