Description

'Voices in the Garden' — Dirk Bogarde Set on the French Riviera, 'Voices in the Garden' centres on Lady Peverill, known as Cuckoo, an older woman living in a grand villa with her husband Archie, a military historian fascinated by Napoleon. When the bored and unhappy Cuckoo attempts to walk into the lake, she is rescued by the young drifter Marcus Pollock, who is subsequently invited into the household. The arrival of Marcus, his girlfriend and a group of eccentric filmmakers sets in motion a series of romantic entanglements, rivalries and deceptions within the villa’s fading world of privilege. First published in 1981, it was Bogarde’s second novel and combines dark comedy, eccentric characters and a meditation on love, ageing and illusion.
