Description

'A Month in the Country' by J. L. Carr is a poignant novel about memory, loss and the possibility of renewal after the First World War. Set in the summer of 1920, it follows Tom Birkin, a veteran of the war and a damaged survivor of a failed marriage, who travels to the Yorkshire village of Oxgodby to uncover and restore a medieval wall painting in the local church. While working there, Birkin forms a friendship with another veteran searching for a lost grave and becomes increasingly absorbed in the beauty and rhythms of the countryside, as well as in an unspoken attraction to the vicar’s wife. First published in 1980, the novel won the Guardian Fiction Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and is notable for its quiet exploration of the ways art, landscape and memory can offer consolation for the losses of the past.
